Resilience in Ink: Finding Purpose Beyond Kidney Failure
​Thank you for the opportunity to stand before you today as a storyteller who has found their true calling in the crucible of unexpected adversity.
​Every writer has an origin story. Mine did not begin with a sudden burst of inspiration or a lifelong dream nurtured from childhood. It began with a devastating medical diagnosis: IgA Nephropathy, or IgAN. For those unfamiliar with this silent adversary, it is a chronic autoimmune disease that systematically, relentlessly attacks and destroys the kidneys. In a matter of clicks on a medical chart, the physical foundation of my life crumbled. The energy, stamina, and physical capabilities I once took for granted vanished. IgAN effectively locked me out of the traditional workforce, closing the door on any livelihood that required physical labor or predictable, standard hours.
​When your body enters a state of chronic failure, it is terrifyingly easy for your identity to fail along with it. I was thrust into the exhausting, clinical world of dialysis—a grueling routine where life is measured in weekly hours tethered to a machine that mimics what my own organs can no longer do. Dialysis cleanses the blood, but it can easily drain the spirit. In those early, draining sessions, sitting in a plastic chair surrounded by the rhythmic, sterile hum of medical equipment, I faced a profound choice: succumb to the quiet despair of a compromised body, or find a window to a larger world.
​I chose the window. And that window was writing.
​Ironically, the very machine that restricts my physical body has unlocked an entirely new creative universe. Dialysis didn't break me; it inspired me. Bound to a chair for hours at a time, I realized that while my hands couldn't lift heavy weights, they could still type. While my legs couldn't carry me across long distances, my imagination could span worlds, genres, and eras. I began to write. I wrote to escape the stark white walls of the clinic, but more importantly, I wrote to reclaim my agency.
​Through the fantasy and horror genres, I found a way to externalize the internal battle of chronic illness. Writing became my active rebellion against IgAN. On the page, I am not a patient; I am a world-builder, a creator, a survivor, and an architect of destiny. My illness has lent a raw, visceral depth to my narratives, teaching me the true meaning of tension, stakes, and resilience.
​However, the passion to create must contend with the financial realities of chronic medical care. This brings me to my request today. I am applying for this writing grant to secure the crucial resources needed to elevate my work from a private lifeline to a sustainable literary career.
​A writer's work requires tools, professional editing, cover design, formatting, and marketing resources to truly compete in today’s independent publishing landscape. Because my illness prevents me from working a conventional job to fund these creative overhead costs, this grant represents the bridge between my raw manuscript and the readers who need to hear these stories. It is an investment in professional development, allowing me to focus my limited physical energy entirely on producing high-quality, impactful literature.
​By supporting my work, you are not simply funding a book; you are investing in a voice forged in the fires of physical adversity. You are validating the idea that a disability does not mean a lack of productivity or purpose. With this grant, I intend to prove that while IgA Nephropathy may have taken my kidney function, it inadvertently gave me my life's true work.
